Class 8 matters more than its reputation suggests. There is no board exam at the end of it, which is exactly why families treat it as a light year. But Class 8 is where the algebra, geometry and science fundamentals that Classes 9 and 10 stand on are actually laid down. A student who drifts through it usually meets the consequences two years later, in the middle of board preparation, when there is no time left to go back.

The Class 8 syllabus changed this year
This is not a normal academic year. NCERT has rolled out an entirely new set of Class 8 textbooks aligned to NEP 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education. Maths is now Ganita Prakash, published in two parts across fourteen chapters. Science is now Curiosity, whose thirteen chapters fold Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Earth Science together around observation and inquiry rather than definitions to be memorised.
For parents this has two practical consequences. Guide books, sample papers and video playlists built on the old chapter list no longer match what your child is being taught. And the new books lean much harder on reasoning and application — which means tuition built on dictating notes and drilling model answers is now the wrong shape for the exam. What we cover in Class 8
Mathematics
- Number system — rational numbers, squares and square roots, cubes and cube roots, exponents
- Algebra — linear equations in one variable, algebraic expressions, factorisation
- Ratio and proportion — comparing quantities, direct and inverse proportion
- Geometry — understanding quadrilaterals, practical geometry, solid shapes
- Mensuration — area of polygons, surface area and volume of cubes, cuboids and cylinders
- Data handling — bar graphs, pie charts and an introduction to probability
Physics, Chemistry and Biology
Class 8 Science is taught as one book, but we teach it as three disciplines, because that is how Class 9 will split it. Physics builds the groundwork in force, motion, pressure and energy. Chemistry moves students from describing materials to explaining why they behave as they do. Biology connects cells, life processes and the environment into a single picture rather than a list of labelled diagrams.

Has the Class 8 syllabus really changed?
Yes. NCERT replaced the Class 8 textbooks for this session with new NEP-aligned books — Ganita Prakash for Maths and Curiosity for Science. Material written for the previous chapter list no longer matches what schools are teaching.
My child has no board exam this year. Is tuition worth it in Class 8?
Class 8 is the last year before the Class 9–10 board cycle begins, and almost everything in those two years assumes Class 8 algebra, geometry and science are secure. It is far cheaper in time and stress to fix a gap now than to discover it during board preparation.
Do the classes follow my child’s school syllabus?
